| On the northern edge of the Chatsworth estate, beside the A619/A623
junction, is BASLOW , an inconclusive little hamlet at its prettiest
amongst the huddle of old stone houses that flank the River Derwent as
it weaves its way south. The village has several B&Bs , with one of the
most engaging being the Old School House , in attractive Victorian
premises in the centre on School Lane (tel 01246/582488; £50-60). Even
better - and one of the Peak's greatest luxuries - is Fischer's Baslow
Hall (tel 01246/583259; £150-200), a mile or so beyond the village along
Calver Road, the A623. In its own grounds, the hall is picture-postcard
perfect, a handsome Edwardian building made of local stone with matching
gables and a dinky canopy over the front door. The interior is suitably
lavish and - as there are only a handful of rooms - the service
attentive. The restaurant is superb and has won several awards for its
imaginative cuisine; there's a less formal, less expensive café too. |
