| The mantle of "Herriot country" lies heavy on ASKRIGG , a mile
across the valley from Bainbridge, as the TV series All Creatures Great
and Small was filmed in and around the village. There is, however,
little to see or do, though the pubs and Georgian houses have their
charms, and you might stroll to a couple of nearby falls, Whitfield
Force and Mill Gill Force , both a mile or so to the west of the village.
There's an information point in the village shop in the Market Place and
plenty of accommodation , starting with the King's Arms , in Market
Place, (tel 01969/650817; £90-110). B&Bs include the Apothecary's House
(tel 01969/650626; no credit cards; £40-50), a fine-looking period house
in Market Place. For a rural retreat, you can't beat seventeenth-century
Helm Country House (tel 01969/650443; no credit cards; £60-70), a mile
west - dinner (£16 a head) is served in the stone-flagged dining room. |
